Drug addiction treatment is not just about biological treatment. Counseling the patient is just as important. It is only when the patient is counseled in the right manner can the therapists ensure that the treatment will be effective because then the patient will make voluntary efforts to stay out of the drug addiction.
In order that the counseling becomes really impactful for the patient, the therapist will want to know several things about the patient’s life before even embarking on the treatment procedure. This is something that the therapist will ask during the very first meeting with the patient. The therapist will like if some close person in the patient’s life is in attendance at this meeting to help the patient with the answers.
Primarily, the therapist will want to know about the current age of the person and the age at which the addiction was started. A related question will be about the frequency of the addiction. These points make it clear to the therapist how aggressively the treatment program needs to be done.
Now, the patient will be asked several questions that may seem unrelated with the addiction treatment but they are equally important. The patient will be asked about his or her race, culture and sexual preference. There are certain demographics about drug abuse, in which some people with particular races or sexual orientations tend to abuse particular types of drugs and in a particular manner. This knowledge helps the therapist during the later counseling process.
The therapist will also ask about other medical conditions, pregnancies and, most importantly, if there was any addiction treatment had by the patient previously.
