When young people fall prey to drug and alcohol abuse, the way to tackle the issue there is quite different from how it is tackled in older people. In older people, a good detox program is enough to solve most of the problems and complications of the addictions.
But it does not work that way for youngsters. For one thing, younger people will not know what hit them even if you tell them in the face that they are an alcohol addict or a drug addict. They will probably not know the implication of these terms, and hence not see what’s actually wrong with them. Even when told that they have to restrict that particular substance, they will not see the reason behind doing it. These are just some reasons why juvenile substance abuse treatment is so very difficult.
Substance abuse rehab centers will insist that the family provide their intervention in such treatments. Young people are quite close to their parents, so it is mostly the parents that are chosen for the intervention. These parents are first counseled by the rehab center on the perils of the addiction so that they can pass on the knowledge to their child or at least work up the urgency to seek admission for their child in a rehab.
Children won’t have many withdrawal symptoms, but because of their tender age whatever little withdrawal they will have will be unbearable for them. This is another period when the interventionists (in this case the parents of the child) must be close to him or her.
Even for the aftercare, proper intervention is required. The youngsters will be counseled, but these tender minded individuals are more susceptible to temptations. Parents are counseled on how to tackle these problems.
