The drug courts have become very popular as methods of treatment all over America, notably in states like New Mexico where crimes committed under drug addiction have spiraled in the last few years. These drug courts are an option for the people who commit these crimes as against prison sentences. In earlier times, offenders under drug addiction in New Mexico were treated no better or worse than “sober” criminals, but today the perspective has changed.

For one thing, today drug addiction in New Mexico is being considered as a mental affliction more than anything else. It is considered that a person who abuses a drug loses all his or her mental balance and is not responsible for his or her actions. This view seems quite justified considering that even though a person is biologically treated from addiction, there is still a mental tendency to relapse into the addiction. Now, if drug abuse in New Mexico is being considered as a mental sickness, how can we expect these people to be incarcerated for crimes that they have committed when they were not in complete control of their senses?

Indeed, the drug courts for addiction treatment in New Mexico are considered as humane approaches towards the problem. They actually bring these people to treatment who would otherwise not have entered treatment at all. The drug courts help these people to stay in residential treatment programs for six months to a year and get completely veered towards a sober life. It is quite certain that the drug courts are quite beneficial in dealing with the problem of addiction not just in New Mexico but on a nationwide scale.
