Intervention has become a very important segment of the entire drug addiction treatment process today. This is when a group of trained specialists come forward to assist the patient to seek treatment for the drug addiction and get the treatment, counsel the person for sober living and finally make the person adjust back into his or her society. The interventionists are thus very important in the entire drug treatment program.

The modus operandi of interventionists is never the same, but there are common principles observed in all their programs. The most recent drug intervention programs target four main areas at the addiction treatment of the patient.

1. Their first aim will be to extend all sympathy and understanding they can to the family member or members who have called upon them to intervene in the drug addiction treatment of someone belonging to their fold. They will counsel and support the family through the entire process as one of them is getting prepared and then facing the treatment.
2. The next step is to train the family in directly speaking with the patient about the problem. They will coach the family in what they must say to the patient so that the patient will himself or herself come forward and get enrolled into the training program. This step is very important, because this is where the interventionist will have to fight against denial.
3. The third step is to encourage and counsel the patient into going through the treatment, once he or she has accepted the problem and agreed to the treatment.
4. The fourth part is to reorient the person back in his or her family and in active society once the treatment is completed. This step involves a lot of counseling and aftercare so that a re-addiction does not occur.
