You may not know about it, but even your friendly neighborhood physician can provide you good treatment for your alcohol addiction. If you are reluctant to join into an alcohol detox program at a substance abuse rehab, then this could be a good option for you.

Ask your general practitioner if he can help. If your alcohol addiction is not way above the ordinary, he or she will surely have a lot of assistance to give you.Actually these programs are nothing but detox programs, but since you are doing them at home, the difficulties will be phenomenally less. You and the general practitioner can also meet and formulate a good plan that is convenient as well as effective for you.

A sample of such a plan is as follows – First the doctor will put you on medication. On this day you will be advised to stop consumption of alcohol. This is going to be difficult, but because of the heavy dose of medication that the doctor will prescribe, you will find it easier to come out of this period. The dosage will continue to be high at least for the next three days, because there are chances of withdrawal symptoms becoming drastic. After about five to seven days, the doctor will advise you to cut down on the dose of the medication. Slowly, in the second week, the medication may be reduced significantly, but there would be regular visits to be made to the doctor only for him to make sure that you haven’t returned to your alcohol habit.

Most doctors would personally visit you at your home when you are on their detox programs, or at least they would send someone. The purpose of this is not to spy on you as much as it is to check how well you are going on with the program. If someone from your family agrees to monitor you, then the doctoral visits will not be needed much.
