Many people who suffer from alcohol and drug addictions are reluctant to seek help for their problems. They may be in denial of how bad it really is, or they may believe that they can quit on their own. Sometimes an intervention may be called for in order to get the addict into a rehab program. The goal of an intervention is to make the individual understand how bad their problem is so that they’ll agree to get some form of help.
It is best to perform an intervention with a trained professional present. This person will have the experience and tools required to have the best chance at getting the addict to agree to a treatment center. An intervention that degrades into anger or nagging on the part of the family and friends will only make the situation worse. The first step is to find a drug and alcohol treatment professional who is experienced in interventions.
Three to eight people is the ideal number for an intervention team. These people should have had to deal with the individual’s alcoholism or drug addiction. These people should also be able to emotionally influence the addict and/or provide consequences if the addict doesn’t agree to a treatment center. For example, one consequence could be no longer giving money to the addict.
There needs to be a meeting with the addiction specialist, and the intervention team should get together ahead of time to make a plan. Everyone needs to discuss what they know about the alcoholism or drug abuse situation. They should share what they will say at the intervention and prepare answers for the addict’s objections. A treatment facility needs to be chosen ahead of time with all of the arrangements planned. This way, the addict can be taken there immediately if the intervention is successful.
Schedule the intervention and make a plan for getting the individual there. Everyone will read letters to the alcoholic or drug addict detailing their perspective and asking the addict to enter a rehab program. The goal is to get the individual to a treatment facility immediately.
