Some rehab facilities offer a service called aftercare, which means that they provide continuing support for addicts after they physically leave the treatment program. Experts believe that this may reduce the chance of relapse significantly. It will also encourage an addict to get back on the right track as soon as possible when a relapse has occurred. When it is time to choose a treatment program, the question of whether they provide aftercare should be a foremost concern. Unfortunately, most rehab facilities don’t offer it.
When an individual leaves a treatment center, they are leaving the safety of that monitored environment which can offer guidance around the clock. Back at home, it is much easier to fall into past patterns of addiction. Cravings are usually more frequent because familiar places remind the individual using of drugs and alcohol in the past. Old friends that were a part of the addiction are triggers as well, and it may be difficult at first to stay away from them. Something as small as a familiar smell can trigger cravings and lead to relapse if not dealt with appropriately.
Aftercare services offered by a treatment program can provide a huge benefit in guiding the addict in these struggles. The ideal situation is for the rehab facility to be close enough that the addict can return to simply speak with a counselor whenever needed. However, it isn’t always possible to find good rehabilitation so close to home. Some treatment programs will contact the individual on a regular basis after they’ve left to check up on them and offer guidance. This is preferable to waiting for the addict to initiate the aftercare contact. Some centers even offer help with job placement.
Individuals who have completed an addiction recovery program should be welcome to return there whenever they need to.
